August 2021
Kiwanis Club Updates are designed to keep all members of the Kiwanis Club of Colonial Plymouth informed about club business. During the pandemic, many of our members have chosen not to attend meetings for health reasons. Club leadership certainly understands this decision and is doing all it can to keep members informed and engaged. We hope this temporary, monthly update sheet will help you feel more connected to your Kiwanis Club.
The 2021 Golf Outing was a Classic
This year’s Kiwanis Golf Classic outing was one for the ages. While the final numbers are still being tabulated, it is clear that this year’s event will rank among the best in our club’s history. Our guest golfers (all 148 of them) seemed happy and satisfied with the course, food and games provided, and mother nature blessed us with a perfect day. Here are the results we have so far:
Mulligans raised $590, Guess the # of Balls raised $167, Hire a Hitter raised a total of $1,080,
Putting Green raised $30, Ball Launcher raised $700, Auction packages raised approx $2,200 and the Silent Auctions raised approx $1,620
Many thanks to our outstanding golf committee, which included Fred Hill, Lee Harrison, Frank Sinagra, Jeff Serabian and Ron Lynn. And a big thank you to all the club members who volunteered.
Kiwanis Volunteers are Full of Bologna
The Kiwanis Club of Colonial Plymouth has been a longtime supporter of the Salvation Army. So when the Army asked for volunteers to make hundreds of bologna sandwiches for the needy last month, our club came through…as usual. Liz Orbitz led a team of Kiwaninians that handled the task in a matter of hours. Club Members Marion Taylor, Shirley Jallad, George Lytle, Buzz Bozell, Rick Schubatis, Paul Penney, Jim Moylan, Frank Ruggirello, George Thompson, Marsha Seaman and Brian Good all had a hand for this important service opportunity. This project provided a total of 39 service hours for our club. Nice work everyone!
Sales are Poppin in July!
According to our popcorn aficionado, Jim Moylan, it’s a tale of two Julys! Popcorn Wagon revenues from July 2019, raised a mere $623 for the club. July 2021, on the other hand, was a whole different ball game. Thanks to the return of Art in the Park and concerts at Kellogg Park, this year’s revenue was $5,768!
Many thanks to our enthusiastic members; Liz Orbits, Steve and Cheree Rowley, Michelle and Cliff Bracey, Craig Jagger, Paul Penney, Dennis LaVoy, James and Wendy Reading, Scott Kappler, Wes Graff and Brian Good. The Club also has been blessed with some nice weather, incredible turnout for events and some generous tipping, ($352).
Also, for the first time in popcorn wagon history, thanks to the initiative of Paul Penny, we now accept charge cards, making up $234 of our July totals.
With five more Friday concerts to go, 2021 looks to be the best kind of ‘break-out’ popcorn wagon season! Many thanks to all members who have made this fundraiser so successful.

We’re Baaaaaack!
For those of you who are tired of Zoom meetings, we have some good news. Our Club will begin meeting again in-person starting April 15. For the spring and summer we are committed to meeting at Plymouth Township Park in the west pavilion. Special thanks to Chuck Curmi who helped get us booked for the next several months. Mark Riegal will be handling the food and Paul Penney will do his best to keep us comfortable if the weather gets cold. It will be great to see everyone face-to-face!
We Need Your John Hancock
Kiwanis International has notified all clubs that members attending in-person meetings need to sign an insurance waiver before each gathering. Our Club’s leadership team has consulted Jim Ryan and Scott Kappler for advice on how to perform this required action in the most appropriate way. You will soon receive an electronic copy of the waiver language. Please be sure to read the document carefully as you will be asked to sign the waiver at our first in-person meeting on April 15. We will have a copy of the language posted at each of our following gatherings, but ask that you familiarize yourself with this information because you will be asked to sign each and every time we meet while the pandemic is still a threat.
Kiwanis of Colonial Plymouth Continues to Support First Step
The highlight of February was our club’s continued support of First Step. Led by Lee Harrison, all of our service committees came together to support this worthy organization in its efforts to purchase a new van for its Plymouth location. In total, The Kiwanis Club of Colonial Plymouth made a $3,500 donation toward First Step’s $20,000 goal for the new vehicle.
Theresa Bizoe, First Step’s Director of Philanthropy and Capital Projects was our guest speaker at the Club’s February 25 regular meeting. She explained that the Margaret Dunning Foundation has promised to provide an additional $20,000 toward the van if the non-profit can raise the other half. With our help, First Step is well on its way to reaching its goal.
Since 1978, First Step has been working for peaceful families and safe communities in Wayne County. First Step is the only non-profit agency in out-Wayne County providing comprehensive services for victims of domestic and sexual violence. The Kiwanis Club of Colonial Plymouth has assisted First Step for years with financial support and labor for small construction projects.
We Need your Input about the July 4 Parade
At the March board meeting, club officers had a lengthy conversation about the July 4 Parade. Scott Kappler led the discussion and presented his concerns about moving forward with this year’s parade because of continued concerns caused by the pandemic. The City of Plymouth has indicated that the usual route down Main Street will likely be out of the question. This leaves us with the option of presenting a parade that will weave through City neighborhoods in order to limit crowds from gathering. Board members discussed this possibility and made other suggestions, but nothing was settled by the end of the evening. Scott would like to hear from members who have suggestions on this subject. We also donated $200 from Community Services to Cookies 4 Troops which is a group run by a high school senior who raises money and sends thousands of boxes of Girl Scout cookies to troops overseas. She has been doing it since the second grade.
